Fifty years of service is more than a measurement of time; it is a testament to a lifetime of devotion, leadership, and community spirit. This was the sentiment felt throughout the room during the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department’s recent business meeting as Randy Smith was recognized for five decades of excellence. Presented with an award by President Dave Stream and Fire Chief Eddie Catterton, Randy’s 50-year journey with the department was celebrated by the entire membership, highlighting a career that has shaped the very foundation of our organization.
Randy’s journey with Dunkirk is woven into the very fabric of our department. As a founding charter member, he has been here from the beginning, helping to build the station into what it is today. Throughout the last five decades, he has broken barriers and set a standard of excellence, serving as our first African American President, as well as holding the vital roles of Vice President and Assistant Chief. His leadership hasn't been confined to our station walls either, as he has shared his expertise as the Past President and Vice President of the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen's Association and represented our region on the Maryland State Firemen's Association’s Executive Committee.
Beyond his administrative and operational leadership, Randy has been instrumental in ensuring the history of our department is never forgotten. As the Committee Chair of our Historical Committee, he has been a tireless guardian of our legacy. Randy has collected and preserved a wealth of departmental information, ranging from archival articles and photos to past department gear and precious mementos. His work ensures that the stories of those who served before us remain alive for future generations of volunteers.
His resume of service is decorated with prestigious honors, including his 2022 induction into the Maryland State Firemen's Association Hall of Fame and the 2023 Malcolm Funn Community Service Award from the NAACP Calvert Branch. These accolades reflect a lifetime spent working on legislation, safety committees, and outreach programs aimed at strengthening the bond between volunteers and the citizens they protect.
Fifty years of service represents thousands of hours away from home, countless emergency calls, and a level of mentorship that has guided generations of Dunkirk volunteers. Randy Smith is a cornerstone of this department, and we are beyond proud to celebrate this golden anniversary with him. Please join President Stream, Chief Catterton, and the entire membership in congratulating Randy on 50 years of exceptional service and unwavering dedication to Dunkirk.
He is a man who should be emulated by the young men and women coming up thru the ranks! He gives every bit of himself to the department! His wife is to be congratulated as well for having given up their time together!
